I never really like jogging, or exercising for the matter.

So... when it came to preparing for the finals for Mrs Singapore last year, I HAD to shape up. With no other viable options, I decided to get a personal trainer to help me get the job done - Edmund. Its all thanks to him that I could get into the necessary physique just in time for the finals.

And so, when he approached me to help him in a photo shoot for a cover on the gym in Guardian's Feeling Strong magazine, I was more than glad to be able to help. Really loved my time in the gym these days that it is lesser of a chore now, Check out the write-up on the gym below.

Motherhood

Being a mother is really not easy...

Or rather, it is so difficult to be a woman... so tough to be a GOOD wife, mother, daughter, daughter-in-law, employee, superior, friend... sigh... What is good to one person may not always be good enough for another...

Every year during my boy's examination period (which is in this moment of time), I will surely have a meltdown. Just today, I had a tough argument with my son yet again; and the end result - both of us breaking down.

Every examination period, I will always feel that I am the lousiest mummy alive (and i don't even dare to think that this sunday is mother's day and I deserve to be praised or appreciated?!) Feels extremely much that I have been such a bad mummy... Have been always so busy with work that has resulted in me neglecting him and not be able to help him in his studies. It feels that I could and should have done much much much more for him. But with my limited time, what would be considered good enough?

I really wondered and pondered over the decisions I had made and what has happened for a good few hours just earlier on... Will really spending less time at work and more time at home help? Will earning lesser and spending more time helping the kids at home work out better with such high levels of standard of living in Singapore?

My conclusion? There is no perfect solution or answer. No one answer is right or wrong. People make different choices and with the choices we make, we just need to bear the consequences that follow. So it boils down once more... did I or did I not make the right decisions???? I'm thinking hard and trusting God for things to work out eventually. :)

Flower Girl 3 Times Over!

My princess is growing up really FAST!!! From the little baby she was, she is now a preschooler that can hold her own fort. In a span of two months, she has helped out as a flower girl three times over in november and december. It was really a busy yet joyous month!

Thinking back, it was with great exhuberance and excitement that we agreed to Eileen for Daryl and Chyanne to be her page boy and flower girl for her wedding. Of course, Chyanne hearing the news that she was being a flower girl (for the FIRST time in her life) was both apprehensive and excited at the same time.

A part that she loved was the dolling up!!! Doesn't her curls & tiara complete the princess look?

Thankfully, the nervous part was resolved with Daryl and many good friends alongside her in the entourage. There were more than 30 flower girls and page boys in Eileen's entourage. It was such a beautiful sight to behold, and of course, totally deserving of our beloved children's church pastor!

The most anticipated moment came when the wedding march-in tune was played and the children walked down the aisle in pairs, holding hands. All the flower girls held a stalk of gerbera of different colours accompanied by a page boy. Look how serious Chyanne is with Gerald...
And when the matrimony was over, Chyanne went around taking a few more shots with her friends.

She sure had lots of fun!

By the time we got to this next wedding, Chyanne got the hang of things and was a perfect natural at aisle-walking. She has gotten more confident as well!

The next stint Chyanne had was at her aunt's wedding. Together with her brother, it was with no sweat that she did this. Am so glad that she can be a blessing to my sis.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO 奶奶

As an entire family, we celebrated my mother-in-law's birthday last Friday night. It was a great time of gathering for the family as various ones played their parts to make the evening an extra memorable one.

The kids came together and made a birthday card for their beloved 奶奶!

Very sweet and thoughtful of them isn't it?

We had different contributions from the adults. But what I loved best was the seafood soup my darling hubby prepared. Looks really yummy and appetizing!

Once again, here's wishing ma ma a very wonderful birthday! 生日快乐!

The family is indeed so blessed to have you being there for us all these years! We LOVE you!

Great News For The Ladies!

From 1 Nov 2010, Medisave300 is extended to include the vaccination against cervical cancer.

What this means for all the ladies out there aged between 9 to 26 is this:
The cost of vaccination is greatly reduced since one can tap into their Medisave Account (or their family members) to subsidize/pay for their vaccination costs. This is however subjected to a maximum cost of $300 per year. Hence, the name Medisave300.

What is Medisave300?
It is basically a withdrawal from your current Medisave account to help cover the cost of some costly vaccinations and treatment of chronic diseases at the outpatient level. The withdrawal limit is capped at $300 per year.

I am just thinking, if you get your vaccination next month, you can possibly have the vaccination totally covered for since the three doses are given over a span of six months. So for all my dear friends that are yet to be vaccinated, get yours once its November!

Art With A Heart For Cambodia

The last weekend was especially packed, not forgetting that Friday was Children's Day.

In line with the celebrations, a friend of mine invited us to her daughter's art exhibition. This was in a bid to raise funds for the children in Cambodia.
I was amazed and appalled when I first received the invite. And quite obviously, I was eager and expectant at how the exhibition would be like.

Held at their home, the 8-year old Rachel had the walls fully utilised, displaying all her artwork.

It was interesting to note that she used a wide variety from colour pencils to water colours. Beside being awed by the sheer number of artwork on display, I am even more touched by how BIG the heart of such a young girl is. Here is a picture of her!

My princess also did her bit for the underprivileged kids in Cambodia and bought this painting. Beautiful isn't it?

As an afterthought, isn't it true that we are all capable of doing our part for someone that is less fortunate than us? All it takes is just a bit more effort and thought on our part. I'm inspired by little Rachel to do something more. Hope you are too!

Memories of Chengdu

Having went along with my hubby to Chengdu for a business/mission over the weekend proved to be an enriching and fulfilling experience. There were many many firsts for me on this trip and the company we had on the team was a great joy.

We very much spent the first day doing some sightseeing and familiarizing ourselves with our surroundings while waiting for the rest of the team to arrive. The places we went to were majestic and in fact, very advanced too!

The food we had throughout the trip was equally glorious, save some being rather like exotic, like rabbit heads (Chengdu's specialty)!!! Not feeling so adventurous that day, I settled for a piece of rabbit meat instead.

The following day, we met with many members of the church, including the missionaries who speaks PERFECT Mandarin. This is but one of the many things that inspired me. Having met the women entrepreneurs in the city has also greatly encouraged me that women can indeed do much more. Amongst them are Candy Guo (General Manager of Empire’s Forever Garden Restaurant), Lu Ya Lan (President of Century Ophthalmology Hospital) and Susan Yan (Chairman of C.G. Families IT mall). They are really powerful women shaping the business world.

The warm welcome by the church during the service made us feel right at home as we worshiped together. Hubby really took a step of faith and preached in Mandarin that very morning. Words can't describe how proud I really am of him! Glad that the service was a great success!

The next part of the day was very much spent on visitations and what I would term experiential learning. We went to a farm in the mountains, owned by a church member. We had everything homemade - food, milk and wine. We even went rowing on a boat together! There was also time spent on recreational exercises with the guys pitting against each other in China's national sport - table tennis!

The last day of our trip was of course to have our inaugural businessmen meeting! There were many new people and friends in the midst of us. Hubby shared in Mandarin again. I do wonder sometimes how he actually does it. Gary and Sara also shared their testimony during the session. Powerful! By the end of the meeting, many lives were touched, changed and impacted.

I had so much fun and of course, work done over the five days. And one thing for sure, I'm looking forward to come back again and see what has been done as a result of this trip! :)

With the City News Team, we ate and ate and ate... for a solid 2 hours, non-stop.

Many of us skipped dinner that day cos we were too stuffed!

After helming 6 weekly issues of CNW with us, JR is leaving sunny Singapore to further his education...

The Most Meaningful Party Ever

The first sight that caught my eyes for the evening was the sea of pink. many had turned up in pink to show their support for power over cervical cancer. The bazzar in the afternoon was buzzing with life as various ones set up stalls at Zouk.

I found out that some of the items were actually handmade by performers themselves! I thought that was really sweet... I contributed a watch, a pair of earrings and a scarf too!

At the party, I had the chance to interact with the other ambassadors of POCC. One of them is Mediacorp artiste Apple Hong. Here is a photo of us taken together.

Doc Lim, the ambassadors, and 6 female bloggers took turns to encourage women to be vaccinated against cervical cancer. It was both unnerving and exciting at the same time as I shared my experience of taking the vaccination. But I'm really glad and thankful for the chance to make a difference in the lives of the people present. In the least, they are more aware about how cervical cancer can be prevented and be prompted to action :)

The programme lineups were nothing short of intriguing and interesting. Especially the Acro Polates segment, we had pole dancing instructors performing and taught basic steps to all that were present. My friend and City News reporter gave a shot at it too! Not a bad experience! After that, Magic Babe Ning & JC Sum took the stage for a good 30mins or so... and blew our minds with their performances and had many interaction with the audiences through games.
The entire evening has been an eye-opener and learning opportunity for myself. Once again, I'm just thankful for my supporters, my hubby, who came all decked out in pink too to support the event. Till next time... Remember to get your vaccination!

POCC Biggest Pink Party @ Zouk

POCC is having a bazaar cum party at Zouk on 24th July, Saturday to celebrate life and of course, having power over cervical cancer. I'm looking forward to be there together with my friends! the dress code of the night? PINK or TEAL!

Some highlights of the evening will be the launch of the limited edition POCC wristlet (specially designed by Muiik) and a magic show by one other ambassador, Magic Babe Ning (also the first female magician in Singapore!).

There will also be goodie bags that are given away and a one-for-one drinks promotion. Better yet, free tickets are given out when you register online today. Otherwise, tickets are sold at S$12 (still a very good deal!).

And... I will be part of a fashion show alongside with a few others. Believe that it'll be a fun and meaningful experience!

Hope Community Reaches The Elderly

Together with my beautiful friends, we organized a community day for the elderly for Hope Community Services.

More than 16o elderly were present today. We took turns to emcee the day's programme and spent some quality time with the old but wise ones. See the team's group picture at the start of the day...

We had some gifts prepared for them... and took turns to present it to each individual. Their delightful faces were such a joy to behold.

There was also a lucky draw! Some of the wins were pretty attractive too!

Birthday celebrations!

Becoming Mrs Singapore is more than what i imagined it to be. This platform is giving me so many opportunities to do more for people. I use to only counsel misled youth... right now, i find myself in events (such as this) that allows me to see more and do more.

Thank you all for this new life! I'm loving it :)

Getting Involved With POCC

After winning the title of Mrs Singapore Queen of Hope 2010/11, one of the greatest privileges was to have been approached to be an ambassador of Power over Cervical Cancer (POCC). So of course, I had to do my own little "research" and reading up on it to get my facts right.

Here it goes:
1. Cervical cancer is the sixth killer disease in Singapore and the second worldwide, affecting many women and their families today.

2. Many of these deaths could have been prevented through early detection at the pre-cancerous stage and vaccination.

3. Thus, with the increased use of Pap smear testing between 1955 and 1992, the cervical cancer death rate declined by 74% and continues to decline by nearly 4% in each year.

4. But even so, it is still very common along Singaporean women and the rate continues to be higher than most of Europe and USA.

5. Each year, in Singapore, there is about 200 women detected with cervical cancer each year and only half of them survive.

Personally speaking, death from cervical cancer is almost like death resulting from personal neglect...

These points gave me added motivation to make my part count for POCC by working closely together with them to educate the public by conducting talks and workshops to raise greater awareness towards cervical cancer. Essentially, I will want to advocate early vaccination as a preventive measure and encourage women who are married or have had sex before to go for Pap smear testing (which is offered free-of-charge in polyclinics by the Singapore Cancer Society). Each of these measures takes only but a few minutes to administer and helps to save years of the lives of many women. Wisely said, prevention is better than cure and the best way to get prevention is through educating the masses.

Kenny Santika (Mrs Singapore World 2010), Pilar Arlando (Miss Singapore World 2009) and myself (Mrs Singapore Queen of Hope 2010) were invited to grace the Avita Experience Event.

We had a great time mingling with the guests, clients and staff of Avita. Avita was the main sponsor of Mrs Singapore 2010 Pageant. CEO Ms Lee Xiang Yin is a super nice and warm lady too. She took time to personally bring 3 of us around and introduced us to the company's products.

Assisi Hospice Charity Fun Day

Here we are, a group of beauty queen friends pooled pur resources together and set up a stall at Assisi Hospice Charity Fun Day.

We were there selling fishballs, homemade almond longan beancurd and a variety of kueh.

It's not easy having to sell food under the hot sun, but it's worth the while knowing that the monies raised at the fair will go towards helping the more unfortunate people.

We had our share of fun too!

At POCC's Blogger Engagement Party

This was my first time attending a POCC (Power over Cervical Cancer) event as ambassador since my crowning of Mrs Singapore. At this event, i got to know the people behind POCC, the top female bloggers in Singapore... I realize that no one is too insignificant to make a difference. We can all help! Cervical cancer is the No. 2 killer disease for women worldwide and it can be prevented by regular pap smears and vaccination. As Mrs Singapore, i want to use my platform to raise awareness of this disease and advocate early vaccination as a preventive measure to all the females!

A Turning Point - Mrs Singapore Queen of Hope 2010

It has been an eventful journey... After getting to know Genecia Luo, now my personal pageant trainer, my life has been taking a new turn :) Joining Mrs Singapore 2010 has never crossed my mind before... and here i am on stage with other finalists, performing to "Nobody Nobody But You". All jittery and nervous, I thank God I pulled off the dance without much mistakes. It's a good thing I have my ballet background to fall back on...

The show went on with much highlights and my stomach's butterflies continued fluttering around. Results came out and I was awarded the Best Supportive Family Award by sponsor, Sappore Italiano's boss, Mr Nirmal.

I have my hubby and children to thank for this :)

Another greater surprise for that night was the Mrs Singapore Queen of Hope 2010 crown. When it was placed on me, i had to close my eyes for a moment, to allow reality to sink in... Wow... I am now Mrs Singapore Queen of Hope 2010!

I am very grateful to all who came to support me... My friends...

and my loving husband who was so understanding and gracious towards me.

Phew! Catching my breath in the midst of work. What an adventure it has been for City News. We gained some precious experiences at some nation-wide and international events over the past months. Below are some of them...

Mrs Singapore World Finalists 2009 organized a Tea Party with some underpriviledged children. City News was present to spread the cheer!

These are Miss Singapore Earth finalists parading on stage... Getting ready for the announcement of results!

Singapore SMEs investing in the development of an eco-park in Hangzhou, China. City News was present to provide media coverage for this first time collaboration between Singapore's private companies and China.

City News has branched out into video reporting recently too. It's an exciting step for us... Can't wait to see how it will develop!

Perhaps... Just perhaps we will start dreaming of moving from internet to print! Keep your fingers crossed with me!

The Beginning of City News

These few months have been quite an experience... Started a news media company online with a small team of volunteers!

It began with a conversation I had with one of my mentors. I was challenged to do more, especially in the area of media. Yes it's true, to wake up to depressing news of floods, bombs, building crashes, disasters can be a pretty negative start to a day. But how many times do we begin the day with good news? I believe there are good reports and celebrational-worthy events in our world that deserves more attention.

Inspired, an online news portal was started, to give atention to news that has been marginalized. www.citynews.sg became my baby project these few months. Pardon the lack of updates! I'll be back very soon... to bring some GOOD NEWS!

Hi everyone! I'm back with more pictures!

My sweetie pie is all grown up and ready for school!
Today is her first day of school but it seems more like Kiang's & my first day of school Ha! Ha! I think we are more excited than her. I made sure she slept by 8.30 p.m. the night before so that she can wake up at 8 a.m. today, and guess what? When i was trying to wake her up, she mumbled "later" ... Can you imagine? Faint! But we made it to her school right on time.

As you can see from the pic, there are moments she really seem lost ... i bet she must be thinking, "Why am i here?", "I am so tired ... can i go home already?". Ha! Ha!
Well, at the end of the day, i will rate her 8/10 for being so ready at school. She only cried for a few seconds when she was tired and was looking for me to get her pacifier for her. But for most part of the day, she was very cooperative, singing along with the teacher and she even fed herself two servings of snacks at school.

It's a day of sun and fun and sand, lots of sand, for the children!

Building sandcastles were such a fav childhood past-time. Nowadays, i still do build sandcastles but they are mainly in the air ;p Seeing the children attempting to build something out of not-so-spectacular grains of sand was a great joy, for both themselves and all parents.

Dong-Dong-Dong Qiang!!!!
Chinese new year has come and gone... I was uploading my camera's pics when i came across these photos.

Time really flies ... Before the new year, everyone is busy spring cleaning, packing things, buying things etc. Months of preparation for just that few days of celebration ... Ha! Ha! What a tradition!

Well, my CNY was a usual one. There was nothing very exciting... On the first day, i followed my MIL (mother-in-law) to visit Kiang's side of the family.

Nowadays it has reduced to visiting 4 homes. I remembered the first year when I followed them around, we visited 13 homes in one day and met the SAME group of people for 13 times on different locations!!! All this with baby Daryl in me... Faint, right? Our second day is super free and easy. We visited my mum & went to my 92 year old grandma's house for lunch.

And after that, we are free! So we stayed home & invited different ones to come visit us. Ha! Ha! As we were so bored during the CNY holidays, it always brightens our day when friends come over. I think Melvin, Johnson & Shilin were at my house for 4 days in a row! Ha! Ha!
Melvin said during those few days, he visited me more often than spending time with his dad at home man! LOL!

Wild at Wild Wild Wet!

Chyanne is a genius! She has such a flair for photography. When the kids were going wild at wild wild wet one afternoon, she took the digi cam n snapped away. Everyone knows that still life is (supposedly) the simplest type of photography cos they are, erm, still? To capture moving objects requires more techniques i.e. stable hands and all. See Chyanne's work...

Ok, we did aid her by keeping still... but still, we are in the category of "moving objects" aren't we? ;p 2 years going 3 and she can already shoot pics!

Kiang's Solo

I said goodbye to 2007 in Stewards River Boat at Marina Bay. With more than 50 friends, we booked the River Boat to recollect the last few moments of the year. The ever spontaneous girls put up a great show singing cheena oldie Cha-cha-em-bo, Sophie, Kelvin & team did a drama which played out the lovely memories the last 12 months and others grooved on the dance floor but the highlight of the performance was definitely Kiang's! Having not heard him sing a mandarin pop song for ages, that night my heart swooned again... :) That's the power of love for you.

Kids @ Zoo

For my ailing memory's sake, the next few posts will be flash-backs of the last few days :)

See a group of mothers tearing their hair out a few days before school reopens. No, not because of school textbooks that were yet to be bought, uniforms unpressed, tattered bags yet to be replaced... and oh! Socks too! Gosh... that brings me back to the never ending list of things to do. Well, guess my darlings are worth the busy bee syndrome. Anyway, we were cracking our brains over an issue - Where should we bring our children out to enjoy their last few days of freedom??!

In the end, we realised the all too conventional idea is presumably the best after all - Animals @ the Zoo! Sure to keep the kids busy! With that, we set off to the Singapore Zoological Gardens and the next thing we knew... a new understanding of "chaos" was revealed to us parents. Kids are amazing in that they never fail to bring these familiar words up another level of intensity.

The water playground was a greater draw to the kids compared to the animals in the end.. But well, we just wanted a day out for the kids to play with their friends! :)

Sorry for the disappearance! The past weeks have been packed PACKED P-A-C-K-E-D with Christmas celebrations, New Year Eve's countdown, New Year's Day boggle and well, u can name the rest...

In the midst of the hussle & bustle, my family was introduced to a new game - The Nintendo Wii!! The 5th home video game console released by Nintendo, Wii is the direct successor to the Nintendo GameCube. The Wii Remote, a wireless controller which is used as a handheld pointing device can detect acceleration and orientation 3-D. Amazing eh?

I had a great laugh when my friends came over one afternoon to try out boxing on Wii. You'll know what i mean when u see the videos below... Hold your breath, their facial expressions are hilarious!

We just had our finale for Breakaway Camp ~ Synergy II!
One of the most memorable moments was during the 5am "Game of Life" when Johnson, “saboed” by the committee, dressed up as a nurse! We had a great laugh that night in the midst of our planning.
Life would have been so boring without such a sporting friend like him! Ha! Pictures coming up soon ;) Johnson.... Beware!!! Ha! Ha!

The Princess Wedding

I specially flew over to Jakarta, Indonesia to attend one of my members’ wedding … Sandy & Lalani’s Wedding! It was like the “Wedding of the Year” … super grand and glam! As the guys (Barry, Hendri, Andreas, Randolph, Jimmy, Adam and Andi) were all there as well, we had a great time “catching” up with them and they even taught me how to play bridge. Umm … And being a first-timer, I even beat Adam hands down! Ha! Ha! Just that due to my short stay, they can’t show me around Jakarta, and the only place they managed to bring me is to have a drink at “Starbucks!” Can you beat that? I’m first time visiting Jakarta and that is the only memory they are giving me man … Ha! This is going to be my hottest “suan-ing” topic whenever I talk to the Indo guys for a while … Hee! Hee!

Photo Shoot

Today I did what I would only consider doing over my dead body … Ha! I finally did a photo shoot for my friend, Roy who suddenly has a great surge of interest in photography. He has been trying to arrange a time with me and I always chicken out with excuses. Hee! The session was hilarious as I didn’t know how to pose and have various expressions … Ha! Ha! So as you can see, most of the pictures are still with my usual standard Kodak smile! And really thank God that Siang was around to help out … from choosing clothes to helping me to pose to adjusting my clothes and hair etc. She really became the photographer’s assistant that day. Ha! Check out the photos … and don’t you dare laugh ah! Hee!

Birthday Celebration @ KBox

I had an absolutely fabulous time @ K-Box Marina last Wednesday! In the name of celebrating my birthday, i met up with my friends to exercise our vocal chords :)

I had a very special birthday cake made with ice-cream puffs & choc cube cakes too!

We sang from 8pm till 11pm and was considering whether to extend... but since everyone had to work the next day, we decided to be really good & disciplined employees & headed back home to rest :) Psst: Boss, i hope you read this entry!
